Dentures in Birmingham, AL

Four older adults laughing at event l Birmingham AL dentistMissing teeth or dentures that don’t fit properly can undoubtedly create lots of problems. If you have missing teeth, you know that chewing and speaking properly can be a challenge. Maybe you’re living with older dentures that are uncomfortable because they simply do not fit properly.

If you picture dentures and think of flat, white rows of prominent, fake-looking teeth, you’re not alone. But we’re happy to tell you that at our Birmingham dental office, we use only the highest quality, updated dental materials to create dentures that look natural and even enhance your appearance.

Custom Dentures For You

Dentures are a long-standing, popular tooth replacement option that replaces missing teeth. Dentures can either be complete or partial, which means they can replace either all your teeth on the top or bottom gum line or a few missing teeth. Dr. Aaron Cook will determine which option is best for your oral health, and we can customize your dentures to fit your mouth perfectly and blend in with any existing natural teeth.

While old-fashioned dentures were often comically large and artificial-looking, modern dentures nod at the dental advancements we are able to enjoy. Patients in Birmingham can enjoy eating, chewing, and speaking with grace—knowing that their dentures look and function like natural teeth.

High Quality, Natural-Looking Results

Old fashioned dentures were constructed using the best materials available at the time. Dentures used to be thought of as a necessary dental appliance that was strictly functional. This didn’t allow much room for creating customized dentures that actually looked like natural teeth. By comparison, modern dentures are custom-crafted using updated materials with an eye toward beauty and symmetry as well as comfort. The goal is to create a set of dentures that have all the natural variations that appear with teeth.

Working with specifications provided by Dr. Cook, trained dental technicians create each replacement tooth separately and then position them individually in a comfortable acrylic base. You are an essential part of the process and have the final word on the desired appearance of your new dentures. We want our patients to be on board through each step of their dental procedure, customizing the shape, style, shade, and alignment if each tooth has a lot of impact on your style, personality, and even the contours of your face.

Why Are Dentures Important?

Dentures not only enhance the look of your smile that is missing multiple teeth, but they also support the entire structure of your mouth by filling out the gaps that missing teeth create. Eating certain types of food is prohibitive without teeth, and dentures make it possible to chew nourishing and healthy food. If a tooth needs to be extracted to save your dental health, dentures can restore the tooth and allow Dr. Cook to keep your smile healthy and pain-free.

Dentures are an attractive and accessible option for patients who need to eliminate a tooth due to decay or damage, as well as patients who have multiple missing teeth and want to improve their quality of life. If Dr. Cook has recommended a dental extraction to improve your oral health, you may be interested in dentures to maintain your ability to eat and speak with ease, and to avoid the embarrassment of a gapped smile. As we touched on briefly earlier, there are basically two types of dentures; Complete dentures and partial dentures.

Complete dentures are a viable option when both upper and lower teeth are missing. This restores the entire gum line of your arch through the use of complete or full dentures. Full dentures remain in place through suction and dental adhesive. Like partial dentures, they can be removed for cleaning or before sleep.

Partial dentures fill the space left by several missing teeth, so Dr. Cook will use your existing natural teeth as a basis of comparison in customizing your dentures. Partial dentures are a great alternative when adjacent teeth cannot support dental prosthetics like dental bridges, or when multiple teeth are missing. Dr. Cook fits your partial dentures to the gum line and secures them to neighboring teeth to keep the denture in place. They can be removable for easy cleaning or when sleeping

The most common problem experienced by denture wearers is irritation caused by dentures that constantly slip and shift. If this is a concern, Dr. Cook can talk to you about the option of retaining your dentures with mini dental implants. Dentures retained with implants snap in place to create a completely secure fit that eliminates any discomfort. Implant-supported dentures are permanent and stable, so they will never shift, move, or fall out unexpectedly. This may be an excellent alternative for patients who don’t want to keep replacing their dentures, especially since dental implants stop bone loss and are an asset to your oral health.

Despite what kind of dentures are the best option for you, all dentures alike need to be kept clean and bacteria-free. Like regular teeth, they need to be cleaned daily to prevent the build-up of bacteria, tartar, and plaque that can cause damage to existing teeth and gums.

How to Keep Your Dentures Clean

Caring for your dentures is not hard at all. Remove your partial or complete dentures and clean them with water to remove any food particles or bacteria that may be on the surface. Gently brush your dentures using a denture brush or soft-bristled toothbrush along with a recommended denture cleaner. Dr. Cook may recommend a denture cleaner that will not damage the surface since some toothpaste or electric toothbrushes may be too abrasive. Make sure to wash the dentures thoroughly to remove any soap.
