Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can we help you?

At Cook Family Dentistry, we feel that you deserve to be fully informed about every aspect of your treatment. That is why we always take the time necessary to answer all your questions. Whatever your question, we've got the answer!

Here are a few of the questions we hear most often, but we encourage you to contact us if yours is not shown below.

Other

At Cook Family Dental, we understand that finances play a big part in your family’s decisions about healthcare. Because taking care of your smile is a crucial part of overall bodily wellness, we want to make sure that you always have access to quality dental services.

For that reason, we choose to accept all of our patients’ insurance policies and will always file your dental insurance claim for you. This means that no matter which company your dental insurance is through, you can feel confident that your family can always access the care they need.

To view the full list of dental insurance providers we have contracted with, please visit our Financial Information web page.

We also recognize that not all of our patients currently have dental insurance available to them. As an alternative to insurance plans, we offer financing through Prosper Healthcare Lending. This financing program allows you to make small monthly payments toward the dental treatments your family needs.

If you would prefer coverage through our in-house option, you and your family can enroll in our Healthy Smiles Plan that gives you access to fully-covered cleanings and exams.

If you have specific questions about these different payment options, feel free to contact our Birmingham dentist at (205) 326-6384 to learn more!

nightguards birmingham al"Night Guard" can refer to several different dental devices worn at night while we sleep.  At it's most basic, a night guard is a piece of acrylic or similar material molded over the upper or lower teeth (not both) that help protect against tooth wear resulting from clenching or grinding.  They can be made of a soft or rigid material.

Signs and Symptoms of TMJ

For people with healthy, pain-free TMJ's, who show signs of tooth wear with or without chipped enamel, fillings, or crowns, a simple "night guard" will probably offer adequate protection against tooth wear.

Other people might have sore jaw muscles, teeth, or even headaches that are caused by clenching and/or grinding.  These patients can benefit greatly from a different type of "night guard" that functions more as a splint.  This "occlusal splint" may require more appointments to allow it to be fine-tuned to the person's specific biting characteristics, and allow it to relax the muscles and position the TMJ in a more stable, comfortable position.  These splints have been shown over and over to be effective at relieving people's muscle pain and headaches that result from over-stimulation of the chewing muscles.

Contact Our Office

If you feel like your teeth appear short or chipped/worn, or if your jaw muscles get tired quickly when chewing gum or bread or meat, a night guard or occlusal splint could provide a simple, non-invasive solution.  Give Dr. Cook a call to set up an appointment!

sedation dentistry birmingham allWe know that dental treatments can cause anxiety for many patients, and our priority is getting you the important care you need. If you experience dental phobia, we can offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax during treatment.

It is very common to be afraid of visiting the dentist. In fact, it’s a problem that affects millions of people. Sometimes the fear may be so overwhelming that you’re tempted to put off important treatments designed to protect your oral health.

Reduce Dental Anxiety

Of course, you already know that avoiding treatment only postpones the inevitable. But we need to find a way to help reduce your anxiety, and that’s why we offer nitrous oxide sedation.

Nitrous oxide is one of the safest, most widely used types of sedation available. It has helped millions of anxious patients receive both basic and more complex treatments.

Sedation Options

When we use nitrous oxide, you will not go to sleep. You will just feel very calm and a little drowsy. Many of our patients tell us that, after treatment, they don’t really remember what was going on around them. After treatment, you will immediately be able to go about your normal activities.

Please don’t put off dental treatment because of your anxiety. We will be happy to explain more about the benefits of nitrous oxide at your next visit. Please call our Birmingham dental office to schedule an appointment.

dentist birmingham alRoutine dental x-rays at our Birmingham dental office are essential diagnostic tools that provide valuable information about the condition of your teeth. Using x-rays, we can safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities that are not visible during a dental exam.

Decay can begin to develop long before you’re aware it even exists. Once you get a toothache, a lot of damage has already been done to your tooth. X-rays help us find decay in its earliest stages, making your treatment much easier while also protecting your oral health.

Importance of Dental X-Rays

X-rays make your dental care efficient and effective. The information found on x-rays allows us to complete an accurate treatment plan designed to protect your oral health. The sooner we can find and treat problems, the better the chance we have of avoiding more serious, complicated, and costly problems in the future.

At Cook Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, our goal is to provide you with preventive services like x-rays that protect your oral health and stop problems in their tracks. Prevention is the easiest way to make sure that your teeth remain healthy and intact for many, many years.

If you would like more information about x-rays and the ways they benefit you, please contact our Birmingham dental office.

If your emergency occurs during business hours, we will do everything possible to see you the same day. We know that dental emergencies always seem to happen at the most inconvenient times, regardless of whether it’s you or your kids with the emergency. Dental emergencies are often painful, and having to wait for treatment just makes things worse.

Seek Dental Treatment As Soon As Possible

It is important to have dental emergencies treated as soon as possible, not only for your oral health but for your peace of mind. Your emergency may be as simple as a cracked crown or as complicated as a knocked-out tooth, but either way, fast treatment matters.

When you get in touch with Dr. Cook, he will evaluate your emergency to determine if you need to be seen right away or if there are steps you can take to stay comfortable until the next day. Please call our Birmingham dental office for more information.

Cosmetic Dentistry

woman smiling brightly I cosmetic dentistry cook family dentistryIf you are interested in improving the appearance of your smile, you have a multitude of options from which to choose. At Cook Family Dentistry, we will work with you to find the personalized esthetic solutions that will help you enjoy a smile you want to show off.

Smile Makeovers

We create all types of makeovers, from quick touchups to full smile reconstruction for a badly damaged smile. Virtually every service we offer is meant to improve your appearance as well as your oral health. For example, porcelain crowns are often thought of as being purely restorative; however, their esthetics also make them perfect for enhancing your smile.

Teeth Whitening Options

The most conservative and affordable way to refresh your appearance is with either an in-office or take-home professional teeth whitening treatment. Cosmetic bonding with tooth-colored composites is another option that’s perfect for fixing smile flaws like size discrepancies, uneven spacing between teeth, and chipped or broken teeth.

If you have something more dramatic in mind, porcelain veneers used alone or with other esthetic treatments can provide the results you desire. Worry about your crooked or crowded teeth? We can help you with that too, by using discreet adult orthodontics for a more harmonious smile.

Contact Our Office

No matter what kind of smile makeover you’re interested in, cosmetic dentistry at our Birmingham dental office holds the answer you need. Please call us today so we can discuss your concerns, develop a personalized treatment plan, and help you smile with confidence again.

Crowns & Bridges

crowns and bridges birmingham alDental crowns are a type of restoration that are used to strengthen and protect teeth that have been damaged and weakened. They are very versatile and can also be used to correct certain types of cosmetic dental problems.

Dental Crowns After Root Canal

A crown cups over the entire structure of your tooth, providing stability and protection. For instance, after a root canal procedure, we usually recommend the placement of a dental crown. In this case, the crown protects your tooth from further damage.

Since crowns basically hide your existing tooth, we can also use them to mask the appearance of aesthetic flaws. Some examples are a tooth with a large, discolored amalgam filling, chipped or cracked teeth, and teeth that need to be reshaped to match the rest of your smile. Crowns are also the restoration that makes up the visible portion of a dental implant.

Natural-Looking Dental Crowns

At Cook Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we have extensive experience with placing durable, natural-looking dental crowns. They protect your teeth and improve the appearance of your smile.

If you’re not sure if dental crowns are the most appropriate solution for you, please contact our Birmingham dental office. We will be happy to take the time to discuss your needs and explore all your options.

Dental Bonding

Woman getting dental filling | dental fillings birmingham alAt Cook Family Dental, we approach any dental treatment with an eye toward protecting your oral health while also taking aesthetics into account. When it comes to basic dental treatments, fillings are the most common and essential to protecting the health of your natural teeth.

Advanced Dental Technology

With updated dental materials, it is now possible to create dental fillings that match your natural teeth perfectly. In fact, tooth-colored fillings are so natural-looking that you may not be able to tell which tooth you had filled!

Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Apart from their lifelike appearance, tooth-colored fillings have other benefits. Because composite material can be shaded to match the color of your teeth, it can also be used to repair cracks and chips in your teeth and to fill in small gaps between teeth.

Another benefit of composite fillings is that we only need to remove the decayed portion of your tooth. This is important because we always want to preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible.

Contact Our Office

If you need to have a tooth filled and would like more information about how composite fillings can benefit you, please contact our Birmingham dental office. We will be happy to make an appointment to determine if tooth-colored fillings are the best option in your case.

Dental Emergencies

root canals birmingham alA root canal or "endodontic" treatment basically restores your painful or infected tooth back to health.  Basically, a tooth is hollow, kind of like a drinking straw.  Inside this hollow space (the root canal) is where the nerves, blood vessels, and other "stuff" is located.  Outside of the tooth, our mouths have bacteria that naturally live there.  However, if these bacteria enter the root canal either through a cavity or a crack in the tooth, the nerve can die and the tooth will require a root canal treatment.

Root Canal Process

Root canals are not painful...some patients may remember a painful tooth that needed a root canal, but the actual procedure takes the pain away.  Many patients actually take a nap during the root canal!  During the procedure, the tooth is numbed, any cavity is cleaned up, and access is gained to the hollow "root canal" space of the tooth.  Then we thoroughly clean that hollow space, dry it, and seal it.

After a root canal, many teeth will need a full-coverage crown as soon as possible for protection against cracking, as the tooth is now more brittle and fragile than before the root canal procedure.

Please give us a call if we can be of any help!

Dental Implants

If you are missing all of your teeth on either the top or bottom (or both), complete dentures are one way to replace them. large family grouped together smiling brightly I cook family dental Complete dentures have been around for many, many years, and they have definitely improved over the years.  They can provide an "instant facelift" by adding volume under previously shrunken cheeks and lips, and the teeth can be custom made to the patient's preference.  They are also a relatively inexpensive way to regain some chewing ability, as well as personal confidence.

Disadvantages of Dentures

Some of the disadvantages of dentures include the fact that they are removable, and they can take a while to get used to.  Upper dentures usually cover the entire roof of the mouth to ensure their strength and stability, and lower dentures tend to be loose-fitting and uncomfortable for many patients.  Fortunately for many patients, these disadvantages can be addressed with implants!  By allowing the denture to be snapped onto implants, their fit is much improved, the roof of the mouth does not have to be covered, and perhaps most importantly, the jawbone is preserved by the implants.

Please do not hesitate to call us at (205) 326-6384 if you have any questions about your smile and how we might be able to help!

older couple brightly smiling hugging I dental implants at cook family dentalMissing teeth are not just an aesthetic problem. They make it difficult to speak and chew properly. Worse yet, if you don’t replace missing teeth with dental implants or a bridge, you can face serious oral health problems in the future.

The root of a healthy tooth does a lot more than just hold it in place. It actually stimulates the regeneration of healthy tissue in your jaw. When the root is lost, this process comes to a halt and your jawbone can start to deteriorate.

Health Issues When a Tooth is Not Replaced

A missing tooth can also affect the alignment of the rest of your teeth. Even though you’re not aware of it, your teeth are always moving to some extent. This movement allows teeth surrounding the missing tooth to gradually drift out of place.

This starts a cycle of unwanted effects including misaligned teeth, premature wearing of teeth due to grinding, and even TMJ if the tooth is not replaced.

Tooth Replacement Solution

Dental implants are the perfect solution for replacing missing teeth. They are held in place in the jaw so they solve the problem of the missing root. Since dental implants are so stable, they offer a perfect base for a restoration like a dental crown.

You don’t have to live with the inconvenience of missing teeth. Please contact our Birmingham dental office, and we’ll be happy to arrange a consultation to see if dental implants are right for you.

Couple | Dentures in Birmingham ALIf you are unhappy with the stability of your dentures, you will be pleased to know that both the materials and the process for creating dentures have vastly improved in recent years. Now we are no longer limited to an ill-fitting, one-size-fits-all solution for replacing missing teeth.

Dentures Process

The most important part of the dentures process is the planning stage. You should love not just the fit and feel, but also the appearance of your dentures, so we take our time to ensure that you are thrilled with the outcome. A significant improvement in fabricating dentures is the availability of digital imaging technology that provides us with highly accurate, detailed images of your teeth and jaw.

Advanced Denture Technology

Materials have also improved to the point that we can customize every detail of your denture, down to the color of the gums and the positioning of each tooth. The natural-looking teeth sit on an acrylic base that is designed to match your natural gum color. The base is softer than those made years ago, so it conforms closely to your gums. A denture that is customized for your mouth will fit comfortably and should only require natural suction to hold it in place.

If you regularly use adhesive and still have problems with full or partial dentures that shift and move, it might be a good time to call our Birmingham dental office for a consultation. We will be happy to speak to you about creating new dentures as well as the option of adding mini dental implants to hold them securely in place.

Inman Aligners & Clear Aligners (Smart Moves, Invisalign, Clear Correct...)

hand holding an invisalign clear aligner I cook family dental in birmingham ALClearCorrect is a short-term orthodontic treatment that uses clear aligners to guide crooked or crowded teeth into a more harmonious position. They are similar to Invisalign, with the primary difference being that they are a newer product and the aligners are made in the United States.

Determine Treatment Plan

If you are considering ClearCorrect, Dr. Aaron Cook will start by sitting down with you to discuss your goals to see how we can help. If we determine that this treatment is right for you, he will take digital x-rays and images of your teeth. This information is shared with software that helps Dr. Cook plan the precise movement of your teeth throughout treatment.

Custom Plastic Aligners

Based on our specifications, a series of comfortable plastic aligner trays are designed for you. You will be instructed to wear the trays for no less than 22 hours per day for about two weeks. At the end of that time, you will switch to the next set of aligners that continue to move your teeth.

Our patients choose ClearCorrect because they are comfortable and easy to wear. The aligners can also be removed for eating, oral hygiene, or special occasions. Everyone has unique needs, but treatment with ClearCorrect typically takes about a year to complete for adults.

Contact Our Office

If you would like to arrange a consultation to learn more about ClearCorrect treatment in Birmingham, AL, please call Cook Family Dental!

woman putting in invisalign clear aligner I cook family dental in birmingham ALIf you are unhappy with mild to moderate tooth crowding or misalignment, you may not need or want extensive orthodontic treatment. You are in luck because today you are not limited to bulky metal braces to get the look you desire; Invisalign clear braces make your treatment easy, comfortable, and efficient.

Clear Plastic Aligners

Instead of metal brackets and wires that guide your teeth, Invisalign works with clear plastic aligners that gently guide your teeth into proper position. The aligners are virtually invisible and, unlike metal brackets and wires, won’t poke into your cheeks and cause tenderness and irritation.

Benefits of Invisalign

Another benefit of using Invisalign is that you can remove the trays as needed to eat or brush and floss. Just remember that you need to wear the aligners at least 22 hours per day, and the longer you wear them, the sooner you will be finished with treatment!

Perhaps the most significant benefit is that treatment can usually be completed in about a year for adults. Treatment times for teens with mild to moderate alignment issues are similar to those with traditional orthodontics.

Pediatric Dentistry

Children's Dentistry | Cook Family Dental | Birmingham, ALDr. Aaron Cook enjoys treating children and believes that one of the keys to a lifetime of dental health is a good experience at the dentist as a kid. We like to see children as soon as their teeth start erupting so we can monitor their dental development and allow them to get used to new people and new surroundings.

Caring and Comfortable Kid's Dentistry

Too often adults will say they've avoided the dentist for years because of a fear they developed after a negative childhood dental experience. Our goal is to ensure that your child gets a positive start with their oral health by creating a comfortable, stress-free experience for them. That is why we will do everything we can to make your child's visits to our office as pleasant, laid-back, and fun as possible.

Positive Dental Experience

We will never rush a child into treatment before they’re ready; that is why “well visits” are crucial to your child’s confidence. Every positive experience we create lays a foundation so that when and if the need arises for treatment, they will already know they are in a safe place with people who care about them.

If you are interested in children’s dentistry in Birmingham, AL, please call Cook Family and Cosmetic Dentistry to arrange a visit to stop by and meet our team.

Children's Sugary Drinks | Cook Family Dental | Birmingham, ALAs a parent, you have the unique opportunity to help set the stage for your child’s future oral health. If you’re helping your child brush and taking them to the dentist for regular visits, you’re off to a great start. But one area that tends to be tricky for parents is determining which foods and drinks are healthy versus which foods claim to be healthy.

Hidden Sugar in Juice Drinks

For instance, it’s easy to be fooled when your child’s favorite juice box is labeled “100 percent juice” or “no added sugar.” You may assume this means it contains all natural fruit juice, but you could be wrong, so you need to check the labels.

One favorite and trusted juice box brand that’s labeled as 100 percent juice and under 100 calories actually contains 20 grams (5 teaspoons) of sugar!

How Acid in Juice Can Affect Teeth

Another thing to keep in mind is that these drinks are often high in acid, which is destructive to your child’s dental enamel and can lead to cavities.

You may have more questions than answers about nutrition and your child’s oral health. Children's dentistry at our Birmingham dental office includes counseling you about childhood nutrition and answering your questions.

When we use nitrous oxide, you will not go to sleep. You will just feel very calm and a little drowsy. Many of our patients tell us that, after treatment, they don’t really remember what was going on around them. After treatment, you will immediately be able to go about your normal activities.

Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth come in several years after your adult teeth—typically, during the late teens or early twenties. These teeth are not necessary aesthetically, and they do not play a role in bite function.

In some cases, these teeth—located at the back of the mouth—come in without any trouble. Other times, they do not have the necessary space to erupt properly, or they encroach on neighboring teeth. These issues leave you vulnerable to infection and pain.

Fortunately, your dentist in Birmingham, AL provides gentle wisdom teeth extraction right here in our dental office.

If you need wisdom teeth extracted in Birmingham, our dentist numbs the area and gently pulls the teeth. Sometimes, you need only a single extraction. Other times, it is better to remove all your wisdom teeth.

Following extraction, we provide you with specific instructions for aftercare. Typically, we recommend not smoking or drinking through a straw for the first twenty-four hours following your procedure.

When the anesthesia wears off, you may experience mild soreness at the extraction sites. Your dentist recommends an over-the-counter pain reliever approved by your general practitioner.

Do You Need Wisdom Teeth Extracted in Birmingham?

If you notice partially erupted teeth (or a tooth) at the back of your mouth or pressure on your teeth, schedule a wisdom tooth evaluation with our dentist today!

During the process, your gums are carefully protected with a special covering, and then Zoom's unique hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied.  Once on the teeth, hydrogen peroxide breaks down into stain-fighting radicals that break the molecular bonds making up stains, on and in your teeth.  The intense light of the Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed Whitening LED Accelerator shining on the whitening gel helps the stain-fighting radicals whiten faster:  The Accelerator light increases whitening results by an amazing 40%!

woman with bright, straight smile I teeth whitening in birmingham ALThere are so many types of teeth whitening treatments available that it can be a challenge to choose one that produces brilliant results. But we chose to offer KöR Teeth Whitening because we believe that it is the single most effective treatment available today.

Professional Teeth Whitening Options

Other popular teeth whitening products are effective, but they can’t come close to achieving the results you’ll see with KöR. While these treatments can whiten your teeth by about six shades, KöR can transform your smile with results as much as 16 shades lighter.

The reason that KöR can achieve this level of whitening is the revolutionary capabilities of its whitening gel. Other teeth whitening products are not effective for removing deep stains.

KöR was developed to improve the ability of your dental enamel to absorb oxygen. This allows the whitening gel to penetrate deep within your enamel and lift out hard-to-remove stains.

In fact, KöR is so effective that it can even whiten teeth stained by tetracycline use. This is unique to teeth whitening products and has transformed smiles for many people who thought they had to live with dark, stained teeth.
