If your baby's teeth are beginning to arrive, believe it or not, it's time for their first visit to the dentist! This is an exciting time, and the earlier we can begin to build a rapport with your son or daughter, the better.
First Dental Visits for Babies
South Birmingham children's dentist, Dr. Aaron Cook, is a dad himself, so he understands how important first visits to the dentist are. He recommends that your little one has their first dental visit right after their first teeth come in.
This seems early to many parents, but these visits help your son or daughter acclimate to being in the dental chair and feeling comfortable at our office. It also gives Dr. Cook a chance to start monitoring their dental developement. The earlier we can spot any problems, the easier it tends to be to treat them.
As your son or daughter gets older, we will incorporate teeth cleanings and eventually x-rays to detect tooth decay as early as possible.
First Dental Visits for Older Children
If your child is starting their dental journey at an older age, there are many things you can do at home before they come to ensure they have a good experience.
- Speak positively about the dentist, even if it is not your favorite place to visit.
- Bring your son or daughter along to your own dental appointments to help them feel comfortable.
- Read positive books or stories about visiting the dentist to your child to prepare them.
Also make sure that you are helping older children with proper brushing and flossing techniques until they can take over on their own around the age of seven or eight years old.
