Don't Let Tooth Decay Hold Your Child Back

According to the Centers for Disease Control, kids get cavities - lots of them.

In spite of the fact that tooth decay in kids is highly preventable, it is the most common chronic childhood illness in children between the ages of 6 and 11. The availability of fluoridated water has reduced the prevalence of tooth decay, but we still clearly have a lot of work to do!

How Oral Health Affects Kids

We all want our kids to have the best possible start in life. As parents, we provide opportunities for learning, growing, and playing. But what happens when your child is held back by dental problems? When you have tooth discomfort, you know it impacts everything you do. Kids are no different!

Poor oral health can hold your child back in many ways:

  • Severe tooth decay cause pain and discomfort
  • Treatment for caries results in lost school time
  • The discomfort of cavities makes it difficult to learn
  • A child who has decay may not feel like playing
  • Nutrition is affected because eating can be uncomfortable

Nobody wants their children to have to live like this, and there’s a lot you can do to help your kids avoid these obstacles as they grow up:

Prevention for Your Child

  • Semi-annual preventive care is just important for kids as adults, maybe more so. These visits benefit your child’s oral health and also provide an opportunity for you to ask questions.
  • Ask your dentist about fluoride applications and dental sealants. Both are preventive treatments that can keep your kids’ teeth strong and healthy.
  • Make sure your child follows a healthy diet. This means cutting back on sugary and acidic foods like fruit juices and colas that damage your child’s teeth.
