Dental implants are life-changing dental restorations that can restore your smile, oral health, and self-esteem. But with any transformation, you may have questions about what to expect after your dental implant surgery. Understanding the healing process can alleviate your concerns and provide you with the peace of mind you deserve.

At Cook Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we’ll be by your side for every step of your implant journey, ensuring you understand the process, addressing your questions, and explaining the best ways to recover.

The Healing Process: What to Expect after Dental Implant Surgery

Healing after dental implant surgery can take several months, but the dazzling smile at the end of the process is worth it. Everyone heals at their own pace, but here are some general guidelines of what to expect:

Day 1-3: Immediate Surgery Recovery

During these first few days, you should expect some discomfort, minor bleeding, and swelling. It’s best to stick to soft foods and place cold compresses on your face. Be sure to get plenty of rest and take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed. If you experience any unusual symptoms, please call us immediately.

Week 1: Early Healing

After a few days, you should notice a reduction in swelling and discomfort. It’s ok to begin gently brushing your teeth, making sure to avoid the implant site. Continue mainly eating soft foods, such as mashed potatoes, yogurt, and scrambled eggs.

Weeks 2-6: Gum and Soft Tissue Recovery

During this time frame, your gums will begin to heal around your implant, and you shouldn’t be feeling much discomfort. You can resume eating other types of food, but avoid eating anything crunchy or chewy. Also, it’s essential to keep the implant site clean.

Months 2-6: Osseointegration

As time passes, your implant will begin to fuse with your jawbone, a process known as osseointegration. This creates a stable foundation for your dental restoration.

Final Step: Restoration Placement

Once your mouth is completely healed, we’ll add a custom crown, bridge, or denture to complete the implant process. You now have a healthy, beautiful smile!
