Have You Considered DIY Braces? What You Need to Know

Lots of us love taking on DIY (Do It Yourself) projects that we come across on the internet. But there is one disturbing trend that’s becoming prevalent, especially with kids, and that is DIY braces.

As a parent you may be horrified by this thought, as well you should be! But a quick search of ‘DIY braces’ brings up over 13 million results! Clearly, there are lots of people who are considering DIY braces. It’s hard to fathom, but you can even go online and find videos of kids demonstrating how to close gaps with rubber bands and even paper clips!

DIY Braces Are A Bad Idea!

The American Association of Orthodontics is understandably concerned about this trend. If your child attempts to straighten their teeth or close a gap on their own, they increase the risk of infection that can severely damage their teeth and gums. The results are poor oral health that can ultimately lead to tooth loss, and replacing lost teeth is a costly proposition!

If you have a child who you think is concerned about the appearance of their teeth, the most helpful thing you can do is bring them to a dentist. Rather than hearing it from you, it may be more meaningful if your child hears the dentist explain why DIY braces are a terrible idea.

Please Call Us to Arrange An Appointment

If you have a child who is worried about the appearance of their teeth, we encourage you to bring them to our Birmingham, AL office so we can talk about orthodontics. Dr. Aaron Cook is great with kids, and he will speak to them on their level to help them understand the process their teeth are going through. During regular visits, we will be able to monitor their development and make recommendations for appropriate orthodontic treatment by a qualified professional.
